About Roberto

Roberto holds a Master Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, and an MBA from the Open University, UK. He is an energy professional with 30 year experience gained at oil companies and recognized consultancies. He has strong experience of working in multicultural environments and interacting at different levels in organizations.

In the initial part of his career, he gained technical experience in plant operations, process
design and plant construction. Subsequently, his work in market analysis and strategy
advisory gave him deep knowledge of refining & petrochemicals economics, broader
industry knowledge and ability to think strategically.

He has contributed to the development of many downstream investment plans, by providing
relevant market analysis or conducting feasibility studies. He is familiar with price forecasting
techniques, financial modelling of downstream assets, and appraisal of projects. He has
large experience of conducting technical and commercial due diligence of oil downstream
assets. He has acted as expert witness and in loss adjusting for insurance.

Roberto has helped many crude oil marketing organizations with understanding, value, price
differentials and marketability of their crude oils. He has developed and administered a
number of crude oil quality banks or value allocation mechanisms.

KBC

As a leader of the strategic consulting practice, managed several due diligence projects in refining and oil terminals.

Managed a large feasibility study aimed at adding a petrochemicals complex at a Middle Eastern refinery.

Supported loss adjusters in the validation of insurance claims.


IHS

After the acquisition of Purvin&Gertz by IHS, Roberto worked for 3 years at IHS as a Managing
Director of the downstream consulting practices.

He continued to serve the same clients and deliver the same services as he used to do as a Purvin&Gertz consultant.


Purvin & Gertz

Roberto has worked 11 years at Purvin&Gertz and has been a long serving partner of the firm, until its acquisition by IHS. Large experience of market studies and strategic advisory. Participated in the flagship long term forecasting service Global Petroleum Market Outlook, taking responsibility for forecasts related to the Mediterranean region. Managed a major study on the impact of new marine fuels specifications on the refining industry. Co-developed methodologies to analyse market fundamentals. Advised the crude oil marketing functions of oil companies on matters related to pricing and marketing.

He carried out a very large number of technical and commercial due diligence assignments on a
diverse pool of assets, to include refineries, petrochemicals, pipelines and terminals. Through this
work he further developed his ability to analyse operating performance and competitive positioning of
assets. He is very familiar with asset valuation.

Combining market knowledge, strategic vision and technical expertise, he worked on project finance,
project appraisals and feasibility studies. He has served as expert witness in arbitration and worked
with loss adjusters in the validation of insurance claims.


Eni

Roberto started his career in the Technical Services department of the Livorno refinery, Italy. He was mostly concerned with technical support to operations. His work included troubleshooting of process units, studies for the definition of small capital projects aimed at operational improvement, analysis of operating performance, energy efficiency, technical support of the development of the refinery LP model.


MW Kellogg Ltd

Roberto worked as a Senior Process Engineer of the refining team. Managed and delivered refinery
revamp feasibility studies based on process design developed with PROII. Managed and delivered
refinery masterplan studies carried out with LP models.

He was then assigned to the Nigeria LNG project. He worked six months at Bonny Island as
Commissioning Supervisor of Train-1 and six more months in the engineering team of Train-3.


Saudi Aramco

Screening, definition, optimization or evaluation of many refinery and petrochemicals projects.

Worked on the screening, modelling and valuation of several acquisition targets in collaboration with the Corporate Planning and the Corporate Finance functions of Aramco.

Conducted or managed technical and environmental due diligence studies.

Led due diligence teams comprising both hired consultants and Aramco’s own subject matter experts.
